HISTORY OF AKIM SOABE

It is believed that our ancestors originated from Mali during the division of the Mali Empire in the 15th century. Some of them left Mali and settled in Abidjan, which is the capital city of Cote d’Ivoire, whilst others settled in Dormaa Ahenkro in the Bono region in the Republic of Ghana. some also settled in Asante Asumenya, and as migrants, others settled later in Asante Akim Nsokote With a matter of time, some of the ancestors who were in Asante Akim Nsokote, namely Nana Pomaa and her brother Nana Mireku and the rest of the family,
then relocated to Nyinaduasa in the Eastern Region of Ghana, now called Aduasa a town in Akim Swedru which is the capital of the Birim South District to continue their life journey.

On their way to Nyinaduasa, they had in their possession three Stools belonging to the Chief, Queen Mother, and Amankrado. Some years later, Nana Boateng, Nana Pomaa, Nana Akrante Joo, Nana Awua, and Nana Asiedua all Royalties agreed to depart from Nyinaduasa and passed through Akim Wenchi to settle in a place called “First Soabe” which is a land belonging to the people of Akim Wenchi. Nana Boateng, who was the Chief of the settlers, went to humbly plead with Nana Sika Ena, the then Chief of Akim Wenchi, to allow him and his family to settle at “First Soabe” in the year 1785. So Nana Sika Ena showed the boundary that existed between Akim Soabe, Akim Wenchi, and Akim Takorase, a neighbouring town in the vicinity.

Nana Sika Ena indicated that the boundary line between Akim Soabe and Akim Wenchi is the River called Abutwere, and the boundary line between Akim Takorase and Akim Soabe is the River called Aboabo. After settling in “First Soabe” for a while, two sisters who were descendants of Nana Pomaa left Akim Soabe to settle in Akim Kade and Akim Awaham, respectively. Their sister, who settled at Akim Soabe, was called Nana Asiedua, and she gave birth to Nana Pomaa, who officially became the first Queen Mother of Akim Soabe.

RATIONALE BEHIND THE NAME
AKIM SOABE

Nana Boateng discovered on the Land that Nana Sika Ena, the Chief of Akim Wenchi, gave him, an epiphyte tree that had the host being a tree and the epiphytic being a Palm tree in the middle. It was intriguing and wonderful to behold, and the people of Akim Wenchi were bewildered by the discovery by Nana Boateng. Hence, the Chief of Wenchi told him to settle where he had discovered the Palm tree. So the name Soabe is a transliteration, which means a bearing Palm tree.

In 1856, they moved from the “First Soabe” town to the “Second Soabe” town. Over there, they were facing flooding issues by the River Birim, so in 1930, they moved from the “Second Soabe” town to the current Soabe under the leadership of Nana Kofi Asante, Nana Abena Dobo, Odehyie Akora, and Odehyie Kwesi Nkrumah.
